BAFTAs 2017: Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman and British royals attend awards in London
SHE seems to be taking fashion cues from JLo. Nicole Kidman turned heads on the BAFTAs red carpet, as La La Land was named best picture.
Awards
Don't miss out on the headlines from Awards. Followed categories will be added to My News.
HOLLYWOOD musical La La Land has been named best picture at the BAFTAs.
Emma Stone won best actress for her performance in the Los Angeles-set musical, while La La Land director Damien Chazelle won best director. The Oscar favourite also won in the music and cinematography categories.
The BAFTAs are Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars, with La La Land winning five gongs in total from 11 nominations.
Earlier, Nicole Kidman turned heads wearing a seriously revealing frock with a low-cut, JLo-esque neckline to the usually conservative awards.
But not everyone was impressed by Kidman’s dress sense — notably, her daughters.
“It’s too low. If they’d had their say I wouldn’t have been allowed out in it because it’s low cut,” Kidman told Daily Mail.
“They would have gone, “No, mum. That’s a rude dress.” They like me more in dresses that make me look like a fairy or a princess.”
Kidman continued the metallic trend also seen on Stone, Michelle Williams and Sophie Turner.
Casey Affleck won best actor for Manchester by the Sea while Dev Patel took home the best supporting actor prize for Lion, which also won for adapted screenplay.
Viola Davis was named best supporting actress for her performance in Fences, Denzel Washington’s adaptation of August Wilson’s stage drama about an African-American family.
A visibly moved Davis praised Wilson’s play for showing “that our lives mattered as African Americans”.
BAFTAS RED CARPET STYLE
Hollywood royalty rubbed shoulders with British royalty on the red carpet, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge turning heads.
Kate wore a stunning black off-the-shoulder Alexander McQueen gown to the ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in London.
It was the first time the royal couple attended the BAFTAs together.
BAFTA-winner Stone wore a Chanel pants and dress ensemble, one of the many stars who sported the metallic trend in London.
Ada DuVernay’s film about mass incarceration in America, The 13th, won best documentary.
I, Daniel Blake, director Ken Loach’s hard-hitting drama about a man caught in the UK’s labyrinthine welfare system, won best British picture.
Prince William presented the academy’s fellowship to veteran comedian Mel Brooks during Sunday’s ceremony.
