Three women in their 50s, who would have thought?
Sonia Kruger, Julia Morris and Leigh Sales are three of the seven contenders for Australian television’s highest honour – the Gold Logie.
“I am pretty thrilled that there are three women in their 50s nominated for the Gold – that is unfortunately going to have to change our dialogue about women not getting a run,” I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here and Taskmaster host Morris said.
“All jokes aside, it is exciting that after all the years of me being desperate for a nomination, maybe as the desperation falls away you start to do some of your better work.”
The trio are up against Hamish Blake, Mark Coles Smith, Osher Günsberg and Shaun Micallef.
Kruger is up for Gold for her work hosting shows The Voice, Big Brother and Dancing With The Stars, while Sales is nominated for her work on ABC current affairs juggernaut, 730 Report.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled because quite frankly, I am still stunned that I have a job,” comedian Morris said.
“Not only to have a job, but then to be nominated for an award is pretty unreal. I thought last year might have been my only nomination.”
Both Morris and Kruger were nominated for Gold for the first time in their careers last year.
“I thought first time around might have been a bit of an anomaly so it is nice the second time round,” Kruger said.
“I feel like now, I know what to expect so I can relax a bit more and just enjoy the ride. Those girls, Leigh and Julia, I feel like we have got a great sisterhood in this line-up this year. I am a great admirer of both of them so I’d love to see the girls take it out this year.”
Blake joked that he didn’t think he was in for a chance this year.
“I think I am just here for the snacks,” he laughed.
“I wouldn’t say the rivalry is fierce at the moment, it is more on the giggling side.”
The Lego Master Australia host’s previous Gold trophies are with his mum, Kerry.
“Bang for buck, it is a pretty good son move to give the Logie to your mum,” he joked.
“It is way more a conversation piece for her than it is for me.”
The Masked Singer and Bachelor host Osher Günsberg was also lighthearted about any rivalry between the seven stars in the running for Gold.
“I am not a competitive person. I am pretty sure that Hamish has already opened up a book on the over and under on who is going to come out on top,” he said.
“I think I saw Hamish and Shaun actually fighting in the carpark – they were just throwing awards at each other.”
Sales, Coles Smith and Micallef are all representing the ABC and were all sat next to each other at the nomination announcement at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
“I thought it was fated,” Mystery Road: Origin actor Coles Smith said.
Presenter and journalist Sales clutched his arm and said: “It was more like the security blanket of ‘oh my god there’s some people that I know’, don’t leave me. Yesterday when we were getting our photo taken, the photographer yelled, Shaun look less confused,” Sales said, asking the comedian and Mad as Hell presenter to demonstrate the expression, and his revised “less confused” version.
“A lot of people think I’m not subtle, but that’s all I am,” Micallef said.
Sales said: “Shaun’s not funny at all actually. No, I find it hard to keep a straight face. At 730 in particular there’s a producer who I find so funny that he was banned from speaking to me because he could set me off so badly.”
The 63rd annual TV Week Logie Awards will be held at Sydney’s The Star on July 30, marking the first time the event has been held in the Harbour City in 37 years.
It is the first time since 2018 that comedian Tom Gleeson hasn’t been nominated. He famously won in 2019 and launched into an bizarre acceptance speech that questioned the credibility of the awards.
Covid measures meant the awards were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 with Blake winning his second Gold trophy in 2022 at the awards that were held on the Gold Coast.
Nominees were announced by ‘rivals’ in Seven’s Kylie Gillies, Ten’s Tristan MacManus and Nine’s Sylvia Jeffreys.
A total of 24 awards will be handed out on the night, separated into two categories – most popular and most outstanding.
The most popular categories will be determined by the voting public while most outstanding is voted by respected panels of industry experts.
The Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter was added to the event last year following the death of TV icon Bert Newton.
Blake, 41, took home the inaugural gong with this year’s nominees being Blake again as well as Julia Morris, Scott Cam, Shaun Micallef, Sonia Kruger and Tony Armstrong.
The 2023 Hall of Fame inductee will be announced closer to the awards. Previous Hall of Famers include Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Noni Hazlehurst and Bruce McAvaney.

Must-see TV from the 2023 Logies nominations:
Courtroom drama The Twelve picked up more award nominations than any other series, with multiple members of the ensemble cast competing in the same categories.
Adapted from the Belgian crime series of the same name, Binge & Foxtel’s miniseries tells the story of 12 jurors – ordinary Australians with struggles of their own – who are tasked with deciding the case of a woman (Kate Mulvany) accused of killing a child.
Mulvany and Marta Dusseldorp are both up for Most Outstanding Actress, with the entire silver Logie category almost entirely sewn up by entrants from the same streamer.
The Twelve duo are up against Milly Alcock from Tim Minchin’s second season of Upright (Binge), and Harriet Dyer, from charming rom-com Colin from Accounts (Binge).
“I’m so happy,” Dusseldorp told Confidential.
“It reminds me of Brian Walsh who was a huge mentor to me, and The Twelve was such a great ensemble cast. You’re in the room thinking, how did I get here working with these amazing people?
“Working opposite Sam Neill was such a pleasure,” Dusseldorp continued. “He’s really charismatic, talented, and a gentle soul. I drank his wine for the first time, because I thought how can I spend time with Sam and not have tried Two Paddocks?”
Neill is nominated for The Twelve in the Most Popular Actor category, alongside fellow nominee Patrick Brammall from Colin from Accounts.
“We’re over the moon about these nommies!” actors and writers Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer said.
“Thank you TV Week Logies! To be considered for Outstanding is so exciting; but for Patty to be considered for Popular and not Harri actually makes sense. Just ask her mates from high school.”
The Twelve picked up three more nominations in the Supporting Actor and Actress categories, for Hamish Michael, Brooke Satchwell, and Pallavi Sharda, and one for Most Popular Drama series.
Meanwhile Colin from Accounts will compete for Most Outstanding Comedy Program against the likes of Summer Love and Taskmaster.
“Since debuting in December, Colin From Accounts has gone on to become the most watched original scripted series in the history of BINGE and the Foxtel Group,” Binge Executive Director Alison Hubert-Burns said.
