TASMANIAN students protesting against proposed university course fee hikes have made their voice heard outside state parliament with a clear message.
About 150 students vowed to “stand up and fight back” against the change in Friday’s rally organised by the Tas Student Action group.
Under the changes, HECS fees for degrees described as “job relevant” by Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan will be slashed, while others, such as arts, humanities and communications, will rise by 113 per cent.
Tas Student Action group member Miranda Bennett spoke about the importance of courses such as the arts. She called on the Federal Government to abandon its proposed hikes in course fees and instead increase funding to universities in response to challenges posed by coronavirus.
The rally had many speakers and also featured poetry and live music.
Students were asked to socially distance, while hand sanitiser was available and contact details were taken at all entrances to Parliament Lawns.
