One school has consistently shone in the Central Queensland region’s NAPLAN rankings for 2025.

Independent analysis of the data from schools as far west as Alpha, Yeppoon in the east and Biloela in the south, shows Rockhampton Grammar School performed the best in both the Year 5 and Year 9 brackets.

Rockhampton Grammar School headmaster Dr Phillip Moulds praised students and staff for the achievement.

“These results also reflect the strong partnership between our parents, students and teachers,” Dr Moulds said.

“We have dedicated teachers who know their students well, supportive families, and young people who work hard and strive for improvement.”

But he said NAPLAN was only one measure of student learning.

“It provides a useful snapshot, but it does not define a child or the full breadth of their education,” Dr Moulds said.

“It is what takes place in every classroom each day, together with a positive school culture that emphasises character development and striving for one’s best, that also makes a meaningful difference.

“When students are well-supported, challenged and encouraged, strong outcomes follow.”

Dr Moulds said the school wants every student to be “known, valued and supported to reach their potential - not only in literacy and numeracy, but in character, wellbeing, leadership and life beyond school”.

When asked what parents and carers could do to help their child academically, Dr Moulds suggested “encouraging resilience and praising the effort behind the achievement”.

“High achievement starts with consistent effort, a positive mindset and a willingness to grow,” he said.

“We encourage students to be curious, to ask questions and to embrace challenges.

“When students feel supported both at home and at school, they are far more likely to flourish.”

“NAPLAN is part of the story, but it is not the whole story.”
