A southwest Sydney childcare centre shut down by the regulator has scrambled to assure families their children were safe as it prepares to appeal its suspension.
A southwest Sydney childcare centre is appealing its suspension after being instantly shut down by the regulator on Monday, assuring families there have been no assaults or allegations of sexual misbehaviour at the service.
Jenny’s Kindergarten in Gregory Hill was ordered to close by the NSW Department of Education, as the regulator of early childhood education and care services, and its approval to operate was temporarily suspended, due to serious concerns for children’s safety.
Parents reported on social media that they were told over the phone the centre was being investigated “due to a number of reported incidents” and to collect their child immediately.
A spokesman for the NSW Regulatory Authority confirmed it was “investigating a number of serious incidents alleged to have occurred” at the centre.
“In our view, these incidents exposed children to unacceptable risk, and we have taken immediate action to address those risks,” the spokesman said.
“As the investigations are ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
In a statement, Jenny’s Kindergarten & Early Learning Centre Gregory Hills confirmed the service would be appealing its suspension, and apologised for the inconvenience to parents.
“We want to state that there have been no serious injuries at the Centre. There have been no assaults, and no allegations of any type of sexual misbehaviour by staff,” the statement read.
“Recently we had discovered some incidents of noncompliance with safety check in and reporting guidelines, and an instance of not complying with mandatory reporting requirements.
“When we became aware of these lapses, the supervising staff member was terminated.
“Training sessions and meetings have been held to ensure all staff were aware of and complying with our stringent care and safety policies.”
