“Collectively, the music industry has a powerful singular voice that speaks directly to millions of people, many of whom are not paying attention to the most important messages about what to do in this crisis,” a statement about the initiative said.

“As one of the hardest hit sectors by COVID-19 (current estimates of lost income sit at $316 million, a figure that likely to increase dramatically as time goes on), artists and their teams are particularly motivated to do their part.”

Midnight Oil posted a series of hashtags including #washyourhands, #keepyourdistance and #slowthespread after 2pm.

Missy Higgins, whose doctor father Chris contracted the virus after arriving home from America, addressed her fans urging them to remain vigilant and “act as if you have COVID-19.”

“Australia can still keep this under control if we learn from other countries and follow these simple guidelines! It will be hard but it is so worth it,” she posted on Instagram.

“Stay safe and stay at home,” he posted.

Dozens more artists will push the safety messages out over the weekend.
