INDEPENDENT Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie is the latest MP to be drawn into the dual citizenship crisis after revelations her father was born in Scotland.
Senator Lambie said on Wednesday night that she was proud of her Scottish heritage, which she only discovered in recent weeks, but maintained that she believed she was solely an Australian citizen.
Her situation appears to be similar to former Nationals leader Fiona Nash, who was kicked out of Parliament by the High Court last month because she inherited British citizenship through her father, who was also born in Scotland.
Senator Lambie told the Herald Sun that she found out about her father’s background as she worked on an autobiography which will be published next year.
“I’m happy to put on record that I’m satisfied that my parents are both Australian citizens and I have no concerns about me being a dual citizen because of where they were born or came from, in the case of my father, as an infant,” she said.
“His father, my grandfather, came to Australia to enlist in the Army in fact. As far as I’m concerned all their affairs are in order as are mine.”
“A citizenship audit of all parliamentarians will clear the air once and for all which is why I’m supporting such a move 100 per cent.”
