Teen’s leg crushed in horror workplace accident at Central Queensland coal mine

A teenager’s limb has been crushed in a horrific accident while working at a coal mine, with authorities describing the injury as “significant”.

A teenager has been flown to hospital after his leg was crushed while working at a coal mine in Central Queensland.

Emergency services responded to a reported crushing injury from a tyre at the Moorvale mine in Coppabella, just off the Peak Downs Hwy in the Central Queensland region, about 11.30am on Monday.

A spokesperson for Peabody Energy, the company that owns the mine, confirmed the incident.

“Earlier today at our Moorvale mine a contractor sustained injuries to his lower leg while changing a tyre,” the spokesperson said.

“He was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition for further assessment.

“We have notified Resources Safety and Health Queensland and will be assisting with their investigation.”

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics described the leg injury as “significant”, with the teen also experiencing rib pain.

He was flown to Mackay Hospital via a rescue helicopter in a stable condition.

A Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) spokesperson confirmed the incident is being investigated.

“We understand a worker’s limb was crushed during activities at the tyre bay,” the spokesperson said.

“An RSHQ coal inspector is travelling to the scene and has issued a directive to isolate the incident site.”
