CONSTRUCTION crews are poised to start on a new $46 million development that will add a 4.5-star Vibe hotel and office/medical suites to Hobart’s CBD.

And the busy street could have a second air bridge, with the proponents behind the Argyle Central proposal to team up with the Hobart Private Hospital to lodge a development application.

Raadas Property has received approval from the Hobart City Council for the large-scale development that will incorporate a 142-room Vibe hotel as part of the 15-storey building that will also include conference facilities.

It will fit under the discretionary height limit in the CBD, despite having more storeys than the 14-floor AMP building. Argyle Central will sit right alongside the Argyle St carpark.

Raadas managing director Richard Doedens said it was expected to be completed by late 2019 and would be operated by the Sydney-based Toga Far East Group.

“Having achieved DA approval from the Hobart City Council, it is exciting to have construction finally start,” he said.

“There will be four levels of office and associated medical consulting space and the ground floor will house the hotel/public restaurant area.

“We expect the office levels to be occupied by medical and health support services.”

The air bridge, meanwhile, is still a work in progress, having not yet been given the green light by the HCC.

Hobart Private general manager John Amery said the air bridge would enable the hospital to expand.

“The air bridge will allow clinicians and support infrastructure and health services to be located in Argyle Central, enabling us to increase the number of beds at Hobart Private, which has been much needed for some time,” Mr Amery said.
