TASMANIA’S Best Tradie has been fiercely contended, but five have emerged as frontrunners, with voting set to close on Sunday.

WILLINGNESS to learn is the key to being a good tradie, a New Norfolk apprentice says.

Lucas Higgins is in the third year of his carpentry apprenticeship, which he decided to take on after discovering an affinity for woodworking while at school.

“At school I liked doing woodwork and stuff like that, so I thought it’d be really good,” he said.

“My woodwork teacher said it’s a pretty good area to get into.”

The Mercury is on Monday continuing its Best of Tasmania series by calling for public nominations to find the state’s best tradie.

During his apprenticeship Mr Higgins has enjoyed working with Lifetime Homes Tasmania to build homes for those planning for retirement and for people living with a disability or injury.

“We specialise in easy-access type houses and stuff like that, so we’re making wider doorways and preparing things for people’s futures,” he said.

“It’s been pretty good.”

Mr Higgins said he could see himself being a carpenter for the rest of his working life.

“As long as my body holds up,” he said.

With many young Tasmanians ready to finish up school and look toward their future, he had some tips for those looking to tackle a trade.

“Just be willing to learn and have a go at things,” he said.
