Two butchers by trade are helping Tasmanians increase their buying power one supermarket at a time with a new North Hobart store on the way.
Six years ago Paul Walker and Kim Barwick started TCM Markets at Lauderdale and as well as butchering they can now be found stacking shelves or even serving customers behind the till.
“We do anything and everything and the customers and staff appreciate that,” Mr Walker said.
“We get a lot more respect because they see you doing the same, might be boring, job that they don’t want to do and it makes them feel better.”
TCM Markets is a “one-stop shop” with a fully staffed deli and butchers, around 50 staff and four tills all providing a traditional supermarket experience.
“We started working together over 30 years ago and we decided we’d make the butcher shop a bit different by adding the grocery, the deli and the vegetables together.” Mr Walker said.
TCM Markets prides itself on stocking gourmet and 90 per cent local products, providing quality at an affordable price and its independence.
“People like to support local,” Mr Walker said.
“Everyone likes to support the local farmer and the majors don’t support anybody so it’s up to the little people.”
The business partners are keen to open up a new TCM Markets at 346 Elizabeth Street, North Hobart.
Mr Walker said having more supermarkets opening up helps the buying power of the local community.
In April they hope to open the doors for the North Hobart community, and the new location is set to provide the same friendly atmosphere as the existing location.
Mr Walker said their aim is for everyone of their staff to feel happy at work, which flows through to the customers.
“It doesn’t matter who or what you are, everybody is happy at work and relates to our customers, and everybody just has a pleasant time,” he said.
While no official opening date has been set, Mr Walker hopes to be opening up the new store in around four weeks.
