THE iconic Salamanca Market is back – in virtual form for the time being.

The council announced on March 18 that the popular attraction would be suspended for two weeks.

The closure will be reviewed at the end of the two weeks.

Launching on Friday, more than 80 of the market’s regular stallholders have joined together to sell their wares in a new dedicated online store.

The website already had about 150 products available for purchase directly from the sellers.

“The Salamanca Market is iconic and has built its reputation on the range of unique, local products,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“Many of the stallholders rely on the Salamanca Market as their only form of regular income. “With the market now suspended indefinitely, it’s important to find ways to support them through this very trying situation.

“Salamanca Market will be essential to the economic recovery of our city and region and we want to make sure it’s in a good position bounce back when the time is right.”
