A $27 million hotel, the tallest building in Launceston, employing 50 full-time staff has opened with a bash for 1000 guests.

Developer Errol Stewart said the nine-storey Peppers Silo Hotel had taken two years to build.

The hotel is 108 rooms with a starting tariff of $199 a room.

The development also includes a restaurant, private dining rooms, bar and cafe as well as a function centre, day spa, hairdresser and gym.

Mr Stewart said a $9 million, Federal Government-funded playground project on adjacent land would add to the attraction of the new hotel.

The site, which is northwest of the CBD, will be linked to the CBD by a pedestrian bridge across the North Esk river.

Mr Stewart said the State Government sponsorship of the Hawthorn football club underwrote the development because it helped hotels survive through the quieter winter months.

He said he had plans for further investment in Launceston including a residential development on 3ha of land close to the Silos hotel on the Tamar river waterfront.
