Not-for-profit Hamlet cafe receives award for community contribution

A not-for-profit cafe that provides work experience to people facing barriers to employment was a big winner at the hospitality industry awards.

A CAFE that provides work experience to those who face employment barriers has been recognised by the state’s hospitality industry.

At a gala dinner on Monday evening, Hamlet Cafe took home the Premier’s Award for Contribution to the Community, as part of the Tasmanian Hospitality Association and Drysdale Awards for Excellence.

Chinese-born Lavender Zhang said participating in the Hamlet volunteer program has been life-changing.

“When I first started at Hamlet I was afraid to talk to strangers but now I am happy to talk to new people,” Ms Zhang said.

“Working here has been the greatest thing for me.”

Last week she found casual employment at a Hobart city restaurant.

“I have a totally different life now, compared to before,” Lavender said.

“I’m feeling good now and I’m feeling confident and I have been able to improve my English by talking to the Hamlet customers.”

Hamlet CEO Emily Briffa said receiving the award was very exciting.

“It’s always nice to get some recognition for the work that we’re doing,” Ms Briffa said.

She said the not-for-profit organisation that runs a cafe on Molle St at the end of the South Hobart Rivulet Track contributes to the community by helping those who face disadvantage move into employment.
