HUON Valley Council will hold an information session regarding the potential sale of the Cygnet Medical Centre.
The council hopes to subdivide and sell the portion of land at 14 George St where the Cygnet Medical Centre sits, which is public land.
Council tender documents show that because there is now commercial competition from the Cygnet Family Practice, “it is no longer desirable for the Huon Valley Council to operate or own the medical centre”.

Huon Valley Mayor Bec Enders says the sale will be subject to a suitable medical services provider being identified through an expressions of interest process.
“Council will make a final decision on the sale of the medical centre once the EOl process is complete,” she said.
“The sale will enable council to refocus resources into the remaining land at the Old School Farm as well as the wider Cygnet community.
“The removal of council’s involvement in the provision of medical services within the Cygnet community will also allow for opportunity to strengthen Huon Valley businesses.”
The medical centre was built in 2011 by the Huon Valley Council with funding from the Federal Government as part of the Health and Hospitals Fund to establish medical services within regional areas of Australia.
As part of that arrangement medical services must be provided from that site until 2032.
Cr Enders said any potential buyer will need to be approved by the Federal Government.
In accordance with Section 178 of the Local Government Act 1993, a period of public notification is required, which ends on Wednesday, March 22.
The information session will be held at Carmel Hall, Cygnet on Thursday, March 14 at 2pm.
