A MAN who illegally tore down his heritage-listed Hobart property will finally be able to develop the Mt Stuart block.
Darko Krajinovic’s development application for four townhouses at 55 Mt Stuart Rd was given the green light by Hobart City Council.
It came as the council also voted unanimously to lobby the State Government for harsher penalties for illegal demolitions in the wake of the Mt Stuart saga.
Before the development’s approval, which passed five votes to three, Alderman Jeff Briscoe said the City Planning Committee thought the site would be better suited a three unit development.
The application was knocked back at a planning committee meeting last month due to overshadowing and traffic concerns.

The new plans contain a revised shading study that says solar access would be available to the proposed rooms of townhouses one and four and a bedroom windowsill in one of the townhouses would have a minimum height of 2m, meaning it would be unlikely to be affected by vehicle light.
Mr Krajinovic was fined $225,000 for illegally demolishing the original circa 1885 house located at the site in February 2017.
He also cut down two significant trees, an Irish yew tree and bay tree, without making an application to the council.

Councillor Mike Dutta also moved an amendment last night that protects the two existing trees from being removed without permission.
The amendment would also require Mr Krajinovic to replace the trees with the same species if they are destroyed, damaged or die during construction.
