Parents urged to store popular digital watch for children ‘out of reach’ amid safety recall

A popular digital children’s watch sold at Kmart stores has been urgently recalled, with parents being urged to keep the item out of reach over a serious safety issue.

A line of watches for children sold at Kmart stores across the country has been urgently recalled, with parents being urged to keep the item “out of the reach” of their kids.

The square shaped smartwatches by Kmart’s homebrand ANKO come in multiple colours with a black glass face and rubber wristband.

But the battery compartment is not adequately secured so the button batteries the watches use may be accessible.

The national consumer watchdog has warned Australians the batteries pose a potentially fatal risk to young children who are exposed to them.

Models sold between October 1 last year and April 17 are affected.

A recall notice posted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) states there is a risk of choking, severe internal burn injuries or death to young children if they gain access to the button batteries and ingest them.

The ACCC states the product does not comply with the mandatory safety standard for products containing button or coin batteries.

Parents have been urged to keep the item “out of the reach” of children and immediately stop using the watch.

People can return it to their nearest Kmart or Khub store for a full refund.
