Actress Margot Robbie, Tottenham Hotspurs coach Ange Postecoglou and chef Skye Gyngell are among a handful of Australians who have been recognised for excelling across diverse fields both in Australia and globally.
Other 2024 Global Australian Awards winners include Macquarie Group managing director and chief executive Shemara Wikramanayake, Airtasker co-founder Jonathan Lui and Professor Mimi Zou, of UNSW and Oxford University.
The awards were announced by Advance Global Australians (AGA), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to connecting, empowering, and championing the achievements of Australians worldwide.
“There is no doubt that Australia is punching well above its weight on the global stage and our biggest asset is our people,” AGA chief executive Kate McQuestin said.
“Many are quiet achievers and as our research shows are reluctant to promote themselves, so I am delighted we can do this for them to increase the awareness of our country’s enormous capability and expertise.
“We should all be proud of what they are achieving and shouldn’t shy away from celebrating it. The extraordinary talent and perseverance of Australians and alumni of Australian universities around the world really is worthy of international acclamation.
“These awards showcase the profound impact that Global Australians have on the world.”
The awards coincides with the release of the Advancing Australia Global Report 2024, which shows insights into the perceptions of Australians and Australia on the world stage.
It found that Australians are highly regarded abroad, particularly in North America, the UK and Europe and the sold reputation is largely attributed to Australians’ friendly attitude.
The report also found 80 per cent of Australians across the globe believed there was a need for more recognition of our achievements overseas, despite only 32 per cent of Aussies working overseas feeling comfortable talking about their experience and achievements outside our country.
Australia is seen as excelling most is agriculture, food and wine, sport and education, the report also found.
