Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Friday, January 17. The ASX 200 index closed 0.2 per cent lower to 8310.40 points, led by banking sector falls.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indexes closed 0.2 per cent lower and the technology-focused Nasdaq ended 0.9 per cent weaker.

Cryptocurrency bitcoin above $US101,000.

The Aussie dollar is trading near US61.99c at 5pm AEDT.
