Tasmania’s largest dedicated cat management facility has revealed its need to raise $1.2m to upgrade its services as demand increases.

The Ten Lives Cat Centre in New Town requires urgent upgrades including the replacement of rented temporary buildings, the addition of isolation facilities and more space to allow the cats to be housed comfortably.

Ten Lives manager Noel Hunt believed the facilities desperately need upgrading with the organisation already caring for more than 2000 cats and kittens annually.

“The building is now totally inadequate for what we’re trying to do,” Mr Hunt said.

“We’re dealing with thousands of cats a year.”

Mr Hunt has called upon the community and the government to assist in funding the program. “We have already written to the government and we’ll continue to put our case forward,” he said.

Over the next five years it is estimated 15,000 homeless cats will travel through the centre and more than 100,000 students will go through their cat ownership program.

Hobart media personality Dave Noonan has joined forces with Ten Lives as an ambassador, aiming to bring attention to the project.

“It’s a huge project for the community,” he said.

Mr Noonan said the upgrades would only be possible with help.

“We’re hoping the community and the government get behind it so that we can support it and get it up,” he said.
