IT WAS a sea of red at the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington with about 1000 passionate cable car opponents uniting to form a huge human no cable car sign.
The protesters, lined up at the proposed base station site to spell out the words ‘no cable car’.
Residents Opposed to the Cable Car spokesman Ted Cutlan said the “phenomenal” turnout sent a strong message to the Mount Wellington Cableway Company, the State Government, Labor and Hobart City Council.
“The message is the same time and again; we do not want a cable car on the mountain,” he said.
“We are sick of being ignored.”
It comes as Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds says it’s time the cable car proponent met with the community to discuss its plans.
“I think it’s probably appropriate there is a conversation between the developer and representatives of the community with concerns,” she said.
“I’d be happy to facilitate that meeting at Town Hall.”
South Hobartian Susie Watson was blown away by the huge crowd that rocked up on a cool Sunday morning.
“I think the turnout shows there is no public support for this project,” she said.
Yesterday, Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the State Government was supportive of a cable car but would “ensure there are robust processes that are followed”.
