PROMINENT local property developers the Behrakis Group has begun work on a new flagship Salamanca Fresh store on Hobart’s Eastern Shore.

The company will redevelop its existing Bellerive store to include 887m2 of retail area equipped with the latest technology.

There will also be more carparking — a total of 56 car spaces — some of which will be under cover.

Salamanca Fresh director Dennis Behrakis said there will also be a second retail outlet adjoining the main store.

“We have been planning this store for some time — we were determined to provide a new flagship store for our loyal customers, which we’ve designed to be a state-of-the-art shopping experience,” he said.

The development sets the supermarket building further back from the residences along Clarence Street.

The DA was approved by the Clarence City Council on December 20.

The construction of the new store will be overseen by managing director Peter Behrakis, who said the company expected it to open at the end of July.

“The existing store will continue to trade right up until the new store opens,” he said.

“Carparking will still be available to customers throughout this time.”

According to the development application documents, the supermarket will keep the existing trading hours of 7am to 7.30pm, seven days a week.

The occupancy for tenancy two is not yet determined, but it is anticipated it will operate in line with the supermarket.

It is understood that any departure would require a separate planning permit application to be lodged with the council.

The site is just a few doors down from the former Action Indoor Sports Centre in Percy St, which liquor giant Dan Murphy’s was considering last year as a site for a new outlet.
