‘All is fair in love and war’: Break-up trend sweeping Schoolies

A ruthless Schoolies trend has emerged that isn’t for the faint of heart. Warning: this story does not have a happy ending.

Are Gen Z breaking-up with each other to be single for Schoolies?

The theory that all is fair in love and war has really been put to the test thanks to Schoolies, with a brutal break-up trend emerging.

Every November for three very loud weeks (teenagers tend to shriek), the Gold Coast, specifically Surfers Paradise, is overrun with school leavers.

Teenagers let off steam to celebrate finishing their HSC, and chaos usually ensues. Among the rowdy behaviour, news.com.au managed to get the inside scoop on what the partygoers are up to.

Sadly, a fairly savage break-up trend is taking over the entire event.

We hit the streets on the second night of Schoolies, which was rodeo-themed, so giddy up!

We asked Schoolies attendees if they’d heard of anyone breaking up with someone to be single for the week-long extravaganza, defined by barely-there outfits, vodka cruisers and plenty of sunburn.

I hate myself for typing this phrase, but back in my day, this was common practice and I wondered if Gen Z would be guilty of such a romantic offence.

Turns out, they are.

One girl stopped to chat, and when I brought up the concept of being single for Schoolies, she was definitely familiar with it.

“Yeah, I’ve heard of people breaking up with their girlfriends for Schoolies,” she said.

Why on earth would a teenage boy do such a thing?

She certainly had a theory.

“To go f**k some chicks and stuff like that,” she said.

Moving right along.

A young girl in a cowboy hat (remember the night is rodeo themed) said she had also heard of people breaking up with their partners to enjoy the single life on the Gold Coast.

“A couple of girls have broken up with their partners,” she said.

And why would they do that?

“Schoolies is where everyone gets with everyone,” she informed me.

Can’t argue with that!

When I stopped a group of boys and asked if they had heard of guys breaking up with girls to be single for schoolies, they turned on their mate.

Three fingers immediately pointed at a teen in a red shirt. He quickly held up his hands in the classic ‘don’t shoot’ pose and begged for mercy.

“We broke up two weeks ago and it just was not working out,” he said.

Are you buying it? Well, his mate wasn’t.

“Yeah because you wanted to be single for Schoolies,” his pal declared.

Then the guy trying to fight the break-up allegations just started outing his other friends, yelling about some bloke named Daniel who had done the dirty and broken up with his girlfriend to be free for Schoolies.

I asked if he was throwing his mate under the bus, to which he said, “of course I am”.

Two girls stopped to chat and revealed their peer group had dodged the break-up trend.

One explained that they have some “strong couples” in their friendship group, which is very wholesome.

The wholesome vibes were quickly forgotten when we spoke to another girl who held up her hand and declared she knew five people who had broken up with their boyfriends to be single for Schoolies.

Meanwhile, another girl said she knew a few people who had broken up for Schoolies, and she said it made things awkward now.

“It so bad … no judgment,” she said.

All is fair in love and war … well, unless you’re at Schoolies, then it is every man and woman for themselves.
