A HOBART alderman is calling for a Mount Wellington Cableway Company application due to be discussed in a closed meeting next week to be made public.

It comes as rumours that MWCC will look to launch the cable car from land surrounding McRobies Gully Tip.

Hobart City Council will consider an application from MWCC at a closed meeting of the parks and recreation committee next week where landowners consent is discussed.

Parks and recreation committee chairwoman Anna Reynolds said it was the council’s general manager Nick Heath who organised the agenda.

Ald Reynolds said the request for a closed session most likely came from MWCC.

“Any suggestion that any decision would be made behind closed doors would not be accepted by the Hobart community,” she said.

“Most aldermen will want this item to be discussed in the open.”

Ald Reynolds said she had heard the rumours that MWCC was considering council land for its base, including the tip, which the council has a licence to use for landfill until 2030.

“I will be asking the general manager to review his decision to put this item in the closed agenda,” she said.

“The community of Hobart have a very strong interest in the future of the mountain.”
