The state government has announced a new partnership with the East Coast region, extending from Orford to St Helens, with the aim of pinpointing local challenges and developing a plan for the future of the area.

Considered a gourmet food bowl, the region is also known for its pristine beaches and wild national parks. But while it enjoys a reputation as a tourism hotspot, the East Coast is not immune from the difficulties experienced in other rural areas, such as housing shortages and inadequate medical services.

The announcement of the new partnership comes after the government formed its first Strategic Regional Partnership with the West Coast Council.

Primary Industries Minister Jo Palmer announced the East Coast agreement at the Mercury’s Bush Summit event on Wednesday morning.

“The partnerships focus on practical solutions that address regional needs and growth and bring together key decision-makers from all levels of government, from business, community, and industry in the region,” she said.

The [East Coast] is rich in opportunities in agriculture, tourism, aquaculture and wine-making. However, we know that there are also challenges – housing supply to support employment and training opportunities, access to medical services, and support for older residents are all areas that need to be explored and we will explore them.

“The government looks forward to further engagement with councils and communities, industry and local businesses, right along the East Coast, to identify what is needed to ensure a vibrant, thriving East Coast region.”

It’s understood the government is set to develop the partnership with the Glamorgan Spring Bay and Break O’ Day councils.
