Victoria records another day of zero new coronavirus infections

Victoria has notched up another day without any new coronavirus cases, but health authorities are still on high alert.

Victoria has recorded its 11th straight day of zero new coronavirus cases on Tuesday.

There is just one case with an unknown source and four active cases across the state.

Tuesday’s announcement comes after Premier Daniel Andrews announced an easing of restrictions across the state on Sunday as Victoria builds towards COVID-normal.

Melbourne’s 25km radius rule has been removed, while the “ring of steel” separating the city from regional Victoria is also gone.

But health authorities are still urging Victorians to be cautious, warning the virus “is still out there”.

Department of Health and Human Services testing commander Jeroen Weimar said the virus had not been defeated and implored people to continuing coming forward for testing.

“After 10 days of zero cases we remain very vigilant. I still have the view that there are still likely to be some traces of coronavirus out there in our community somewhere,” he told reporters on Monday morning.

“That’s why there’s this really consistent and very diverse testing program which is such an important part of what we’re doing.”

Premier Daniel Andrews will be in parliament later on Tuesday where he and his ministers are expected to be grilled on the hotel quarantine inquiry interim report, and its 69 recommendations to fix the botched scheme.
