Tasmania’s chief psych Aaron Groves suspended by regulator

The national medical regulator has suspended the chief psychiatrist of one state less than two months before his term was up.

The national medical regulator has suspended the licence of Tasmania’s chief psychiatrist.

The Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency confirmed that Aaron Groves’ registration was suspended by the Medical Board of Australia on Monday.

He will not be able to practise during the suspension.

A spokesman said the agency would not be commenting further due to privacy reasons.

Dr Groves’ five-year term was set to expire on November 23.

He has previously held the role of chief psychiatrist in Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia.

Anthony Cidoni has been acting as the state’s chief civil and forensic psychiatrist in recent months.

Dr Groves was the 2021 recipient of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists’ Margaret Tobin Award.

The honour is bestowed to a fellow who has made the most significant contribution to administrative psychiatry during the past five years.
