Police and emergency rush to light aircraft crash in rural Victoria

New details have emerged following another light plane crash in Australia.

A man has been injured in a light plane crash in rural Victoria.

The pilot was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Victoria Police said an aircraft took off from Porepunkah, in the state’s north east, at about 4:40am on Wednesday, before crashing into trees at the Mount Buffalo area.

They said a male pilot, believed to be the sole occupant of the aircraft, was being treated at the scene.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the man, believed to be in his 50s, was in a stable condition and has suffered injuries to his upper and lower body.

They said they were called to the scene shortly after 11am.

Victoria Police handed the investigation over to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau on Wednesday.

The ATSB told NCA Newswire on Wednesday they had been notified of a crash involving a Cessna 182P light aircraft at Porepunkah.

“The ATSB is currently gathering further information to inform a transport safety investigation decision,” an ATSB spokesperson said.

Mount Buffalo is a national park about about 300 kilometres from Melbourne, known for its hiking and wildlife.

Wednesday’s incident follows a string of fatalities involving aircraft in Australia this festive season.

Two people died in a light plane crash in a remote part of the Northern Territory on Christmas Eve, while another two died when a light plane crashed in Sydney’s south west on Boxing Day.

On Monday, four people died and three more were severely injured in a helicopter collision on the Gold Coast.
