The driver of a car lost control and struck a power pole, killing their passenger, while the driver had to be flown to hospital.

Investigation underway after tragic crash in Victoria

One man has been killed and another flown to hospital following a single-vehicle crash in country Victoria.

The crash happened about 4.50pm on Saturday when a 52-year-old man lost control of a ute on Channel Road in Shepparton East, about 181km north-northeast of Melbourne.

The car left the road and hit a tree, leaving the driver and the passenger with serious injuries.

The passenger, a man from Shepparton East, was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.

The driver, 52-year-old man also from Shepparton East, was flown to hospital for treatment.

Victoria Police Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Anyone who saw the crash, or who has dashcam vision of the incident, should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or make a report online.

The crash comes just two days after another man was killed in a separate crash about 40km west of Shepparton on Thursday morning.

A car and a van collided in Girgarre, killing the driver of the van, while a woman aged in her 20s had to be taken to hospital with abrasions.
