Canberrans have been offered a glimmer of hope that November will bring “better days” despite the territory experiencing another record day of case numbers.
The ACT on Saturday recorded 52 new cases of Covid-19 for the second day in row and no deaths.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said while case numbers increased, there was no change to the plan to ease restrictions at this point.
“We will have an ongoing review of case numbers and other mitigating factors that counterbalance the increase in case numbers, the vaccination rate being the principle mitigating factor,” he told reporters.
“At this point, early in October with the first dose rate approaching 92 per cent of the 12 plus population, it’s a very encouraging sign.”
It’s estimated 32,000 Canberrans will receive their second Covid-19 jab over the coming fortnight.
“Last month, September, was a very tough month for the city. But the signs are that with a very strong vaccination program, that by the end of October, and going into the month of November, and in the summer, there will be better times ahead for our city,” Mr Barr said.
“There‘ll be more opportunity for families and friends to reunite. And for more people to get back to work.
“But we have the next four weeks of intense vaccinating to do in order to make that a much safer spring and summer period for us.”
Just ten cases were in isolation for the entirety of their infectious period and at least 29 spent some time in the community while contagious.
Thirty cases have been linked to existing cases or transmission sites while the rest remain under investigation.
The territory currently has 13 people in hospital – aged from their 20s to 80s – with three in intensive care and requiring ventilation.
The update comes as restrictions ease in the nation’s capital, with up to two visitors in homes allowed at one time.
“We are still in lockdown. The next two weeks will be really important,” Mr Barr said.
“We don’t (want) to see 50 (cases) become 100. That’s in the hands of Canberrans.”
