Canberra has experienced its ‘toughest day’ of the Covid-19 outbreak with a record 52 new cases and two deaths recorded.

The two deaths were both in their 80s at the Calvary Haydon Retirement Community, and were receiving end of life care from the palliative care team.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said 40 new cases were linked, although 12 remain under investigation.

“We’ve experienced the toughest day of our pandemic response so far,” Mr Barr said.

“Today’s increase in case numbers will come as a shock to many... it’s an important reminder that the virus is still very much active in our community.”

At least 31 cases spent some time in the community while contagious, while 17 were in isolation for their infectious period.

The territory currently has 11 people in hospital – aged from their 20s to 80s – with three in intensive care and requiring ventilation.

The update comes as restrictions ease in the nation’s capital, with up to two visitors in homes allowed at one time.

Mr Barr said he would not rule anything “in or out” in terms of tightening restrictions.

“One day is not a trend,” he said.
