Accused Cassius Turvey killer allegedly kidnapped another teen a week before: court

One of the men accused of killing 15-year-old Cassius Turvey in a street bashing is also facing charges of kidnapping and torturing another teen.

One of the trio accused of killing Perth schoolboy Cassius Turvey will also face charges relating to the alleged kidnapping and torture of another schoolboy just days before Cassius was fatally attacked.

Jack Steven James Brearley is one of three people charged with the alleged murder of 15-year-old Cassius, who died in hospital 10 days after he was beaten with a metal pole in Swan View as he walked home from school with a group of friends on October 13.

Jack Steven James Brearley briefly appeared in Midland Magistrates Court via video link on Thursday.

Police allege the kidnapping occurred four days earlier on October 9, when Mr Brearley, 21, Mitchell Forth, 24, and Ethan MacKenzie, 18 — who has not been charged over killing Cassius — are accused of chasing a 15-year-old boy on Dagmar Way.

WA Police have confirmed that boy is not Noongar-Yamatji boy Cassius Turvey, but told the court the kidnapping charges stemmed from the investigation into the alleged murder of Cassius.

Police allege the victim was bashed, before being bundled into a car, and taken to a nearby house where he was robbed and threatened to keep quiet.

Appearing in Midland Magistrates Court on Thursday on what was meant to be a bail application, Mr Brearley had the kidnapping charges adjourned to be heard on March 29 in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court, when he’s also next due to appear on the charge relating to the death of Cassius.

His defence, appearing via consent, requested the matters be consolidated to the same hearing, and confirmed they would not be pursuing the bail application.

Cassius Turvey died in hospital 10 days after being beaten with a meal pole in Swan View in October.

Four people have been charged with his alleged murder, committed as the 15yo walked home from school with a group of friends.

Even if Mr Brearley had been granted bail on the kidnapping charges, he would not have been released.

Anyone in Western Australia charged with murder cannot be granted bail.

Appearing via video link, Mr Brearley only spoke to confirm his name to the Magistrate. He has not entered pleas to any of the charges against him.

Aleesha Gilmore, 21, is also accused of taking part in the kidnapping, but has not been charged with assault.

She and Mr Forth, as well as Mr Brearley, have been behind bars since murder charges were laid against them for the alleged fatal beating of Cassius days later.

Mr Brearley’s co-accused will also have their cases heard in Stirling Gardens on March 29.
