Cody Simpson has missed out on making the Australian World Championships team after being unceremoniously left behind on Sunday.

The pop star turned swimmer was staring down the barrel of his last chance to make the team on Sunday during the 100m butterfly final.

But it wasn’t to be as he was edged out, touching the wall in fifth place behind Australian record holder Matthew Temple, Kyle Chalmers, Shaun Champion and Jesse Coleman.

The result means Simpson will be watching the World Swimming Championships from the comfort of home as the team battle for the medals.

It was the second final in which Simpson had failed to cash in after he narrowly made the 100m freestyle final following a swim off.

In that final he once again finished behind Chalmers after touching the wall in seventh place with a time of 49.11, a long way off the winning time of 47.44.

There were awkward scenes before and after the 100m butterfly final on Sunday when Simpson and Chalmers lined up alongside one another.

The two men were embroiled in tense scenes during the Commonwealth Games after rumours of a rift in the camp were reported.

Those scenes were fuelled by Simpson dating Emma McKeon who had previously been in a relationship with Chalmers.

Despite saying at the time everything inside the Australian team’s dressing room was fine, it was hard to ignore the awkward interaction on Sunday.

After the race had come to an end the two men didn’t engage at all as Chalmers made his way across the pool, breezing straight past Simpson in the lane next to him.
