Six months of weather ‘hell’ to be unleashed on QLD

Queenslanders are being told to brace for another wet six months, with a third consecutive year of La Nina expected to bring above average rainfall and flooding.

Tom Saunders // Sky News

The Bureau of Meteorology has declared a La Niña alert with forecasters warning of an increased risk of spring and summer flooding.

It comes on the back of the devastating Queensland floods, which claimed more than 18 lives in early 2022.

Heavy rainfall is expected as early as this month. Following a very wet winter, soils in the Sunshine State have not had a chance to dry out, meaning flooding is likely.

Sky News chief meteorologist Tom Saunders says residents in low-lying areas should have an evacuation plan ready.

Though the looming deluge may threaten summer plans, the rain may bring needed moisture to farm across the tropics and suppress bushfire activity.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said people should be prepared for conditions  similar to summer this year.

We will talk to all of the mayors just to make sure we’re very well prepared and to see how everyone is going with the implementation of the recommendations from the last flooding event.
