How Queensland's Covid traffic light system works

Words: Taylah Fellows Producer: Veathika Jain

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, has warned that a new Covid wave is possible in coming weeks, as he reveals a new traffic light system.

Dr John Gerrard,

The XBB variant, which is resistant to antibodies from previous infections, has the potential to drive new infection waves. It emerged in Singapore and is now in Australia.

Vaccines continue  to work against the virus and while XBB isn't a variant of concern, Victoria has indicated it may be at the start of another wave  and Dr Gerrard said the same was possible in Queensland.

With the end of his pandemic powers, the CHO has put a traffic light system in place to help the community adapt to changing virus levels.

Based on an agreed national framework, the traffic light system will show people when to wear a mask and when to “relax a little”, he said.

At this stage, it's difficult for our epidemiologists to predict what the pandemic is going to do going forward. The intensity of future Covid infections would depend on two factors: wavering immunity and hybrid immunity.

He estimated about three quarters of Queenslanders have been exposed to Covid and early evidence showed Australians were possibly not as vulnerable to long Covid.
