Queen Elizabeth II:

Her reign, legacy and life

1926-2022

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years. We take a look at some of the pivotal moments in her life.

Born on April 21, 1926, Elizabeth grew up in London, with younger sister Princess Margaret and parents King George VI and the Queen Mother. The then Princess Elizabeth was homeschooled and adored horse riding.

Early life

At 13, Elizabeth met the Danish-Greek royal Prince Philip. He was five years her senior, and about to embark on a career with the Royal Navy. In 1947, they married, their union lasting 73 years.

A lifelong love

Elizabeth’s engagement ring was made with diamonds taken from a tiara that belonged to Philip’s mother. The pair married in Westminster Abbey before 2000 guests.

A royal wedding

At the age of 25, on June 2, 1953, Queen Elizabeth became the 39th Sovereign and the sixth Queen of England, after her father's death. It was  the first Coronation to be televised worldwide.

Crowning moment

Queen Elizabeth was the first British monarch since Queen Victoria to celebrate a Golden Jubilee in 2002. That year she also mourned the death of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.

Achievements

No royal has encountered as many influential figures as the Queen. Holding weekly audiences with 15 Prime Ministers, touring over 110 countries and delivering five crisis televised speeches, the royal has remained a pivotal public figure for generations.

Influential meetings

Queen Elizabeth is survived by her children Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and Prince Edward. She has eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Queen’s eldest son, 73-year-old Prince Charles, has assumed the mantle of King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, although his coronation will not take place for several months.
