Kids embrace mental health push in regional QLD

More than 35 mental health support services have offered their help to students during Toowoomba Senior High School's annual expo.

Mental Health Week was held from October 8-16, and the visit by experts comes amid rising reports of students homelessness and domestic violence.

Rezgar Qado, 17, knows the importance of mental health support.

Now settled in Australia, he hopes as school captain next year, he can help others who’ve experienced trauma.

Just five years ago, Rezgar and his family fled ISIS in Iraq. He's a member of the persecuted Yazidi minority.

REZGAR QATO

In our country [Iraq] it’s not talked about much. It’s really hard to forget what happened to [my refugee peers] so I want to support them in any way I can.

Daisy Reynolds also becomes a Toowoomba State High School captain in 2023.She says trauma comes in many forms – and having support services at hand can be a big help.

"Knowing there are all of these services available makes you feel less alone."
