Toowoomba's historic homes then and now

Words: Morgan Burley

The Garden City is home to some stunning historical houses that even today let us take a glimpse back in time. These are some of the oldest homes and what they are being used for now.

The former home of Sir Hugh Nelson, a Queensland premier, this 10ha property was built in 1876 for his father, Reverend William Lambie Nelson.

Gabbinbar Homestead

The home remained in the Nelson family until 1970. Listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, it is now a popular wedding venue, after being bought by Barry Bernoth around 2000.

Overlooking the Toowoomba Range, the Georgian home was built for  Francis and Marion Gregory subsequently names Harlaxton Manor.

Former Governor of Queensland Lord Lamington rented the house for a short time. After the death of owners George and Dorothea Cook in 1982, it has remained, for the most part, unoccupied.

A supposedly haunted location within Toowoomba, the privately-owned Ascot House was built from the 1870s to the 1890s by father-son duo James and Harry Marks.

The site was originally a single-storey home, which would latter see a two-storeyed extension added on. The land has been subdivided, with Ascot House now privately owned and rented.
