 A SHORT GUIDE

 Haunted or hoax?

It's an idyllic town with a rich colonial history, but is something sinister lurking in the shadows of Toowoomba? Labelled  Australia’s paranormal capital, these are the locations with a history of ghost sightings and paranormal experiences.

Built in 1847, reports of ghostly activity have lingered around the inn for decades and ghost tours have been held here since 2014,

Royal Bull’s Head Inn

Legend has it the cries of young children are heard in the rooms, and ghosts have been sighted in the pub, including two farmers who died of arsenicpoisoning in the 1800s.

In 1944, Elizabeth Perkins was killed by a train when her shoe became stuck on the level crossing. Many say she never left the station.

Toowoomba Railway Station

Her ghost has been seen around the station, including in the second story window above the platform, and workers have reported feeling the touch of her cold fingers on their neck.

A lady in grey is said to frequent the hospital and has been seen many times by staff and patients.

St Vincent’s Hospital

Believed to be a ghost of one of the Sisters of Charity, who established the hospital in 1922, patients have reported seeing her leaning over their beds, sometimes leaving a cold 'drip' of water.

Built in the 1870s, Ascot House is one of the more chilling haunted houses in Toowoomba.

Ascot House

Bought in 1984 by Lois Jackman, not long after moving in, she noticed the walls felt like ice and heard loud footsteps through the empty home. She began to research the house and discovered it's tragic secret.

In July 1891, Maggie Hume, a pregnant and unwed servant, took her life at the house with a lethal dose of strychnine. Her presence and even occasionally, her cold touch, is still felt in the historic building.

A former Old Toowoomba Court House and reformatory for girls, the building has a tragic past.

De Molay House

At night, the spirit of a young female reformatory inmate can be seen in the attic on the first floor, where local ghost hunters say, she hanged herself out of misery.

Used as a military hospital during World War II, Downlands College has its share of spooky stories.

Not only is it said a priest haunts the school, but a local ghost hunting group shared this 'creepy' historic photo which allegedly shows a ghost boy lurking in the shadows.
