Five dog breeds to be banned in Queensland following attacks

Queenslanders whose dogs hurt or fatally injure people could be sent to prison under new laws proposed by the state government.Owners could face penalties of up to $100,000 or up to three years in jail in the most serious cases under the laws.If passed, the laws will also implement a ban on five restricted dog breeds, including the American pit bull terrier, and mastiff breeds like the Dogo Argentino (Argentinian fighting dogs), Fila Brasileiro (Brazilian fighting dogs), Japanese Tosa, and the Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario.Agriculture Minister Mark Furner said the reforms to the Cats and Dogs Act were in response to a review conducted by various stakeholders, including the department, councils and the RSPCA.
