Bold plan to rename iconic landmark

Words: Michael NolanProducer: Veathika Jain

Plans are under way to return Table Top Mountain to its traditional name, Meewah, with the idea already gaining the support of key politicians.

At a service to mark the 179th anniversary of the Battle of Meewah, Darling Downs Indigenous leader Uncle Wayne Fossey said the name change could happen within 18 months.

In 1842, when settlers began encroaching on the Lockyer Valley, they were met with resistance from local tribes. After  50 or 60 Aboriginal people were poisoned on Kilcoy Station, the resistance gathered momentum.

Some background...

In 1843, indigenous warrior, Multuggerah, led an ambush on a caravan heading up the Toowoomba Range.  His victory sparked a guerrilla campaign involving 1500 warriors that pushed white settlers back to what is now Logan.

Uncle Wayne said changing the name to Meewah was about "understanding and truth telling,” and would be similar to Ayers Rock and Fraser Island being renamed Uluru and K’gari respectively.

Truth-telling

UNCLE WAYNE

We should be talking about Meewah as Meewah, we should be talking about the history of Meewah and we should be telling our stories because they are brilliant stories.

He is pushing Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley mayors and councils to take a vote in the coming months. If it passes then the proposal would move to the Queensland Government.

It is hoped the name change would place Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley economies in a position where they could draw on growing tourism interest around Indigenous heritage.

While no formal vote has been scheduled, Toowoomba mayors Paul Antonio and Lockyer Valley mayor Tanya Milligan supported the name change and "would like to see it recognised as Meewah".
