A WOMAN driver who blew a breath/alcohol reading more than four times the legal limit had initially denied to police that she had been drinking or driving.
Police patrolling Long St, Toowoomba, about 12.25am on December 1, had spotted a car without lights on driving on the street and pulled the car over, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.
The car’s driver, Kaylene Alice Coutts, got out of the car with her hands in the air, police prosecutor Chris Willson told the court.
The 28-year-old appeared “grossly intoxicated” and had trouble standing, Senior Constable Willson said.
She was taken to the police station where she became belligerent, telling police she had not been drinking and had not been driving, he said.
Coutts then blew a breath/alcohol reading of 0.218, Snr Const. Willson said.
The self-represented Coutts pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor.
Asked by Acting Magistrate Roger Stark why she had been driving with such a high breath/alcohol reading, Coutts replied: “Just a bad decision. I was having a bad day.”
She told the court she was working and that the loss of driver’s licence would impact on the number of hours she would be able to work.
Mr Stark noted Coutts had no similar previous offences and that she had been without her driver’s licence since the incident on December 1.
Mr Stark fined her $1000 and disqualified her from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for 12 months.
