Two Toowoomba teenagers will be without their families this Christmas after both were locked up for alleged offences committed overnight Sunday.
The pair, aged 14 and 13 respectively, appeared in Toowoomba Children’s Court on Monday charged with burglary and leading police on a chase through Toowoomba streets in a stolen car in the early hours of Monday.
Police claim the pair broke into a house in Toowoomba late Sunday night while the occupants were asleep and stole keys to the car which they allegedly then drove away in.
Police found the stolen car being driven on Alderley St and went to stop the vehicle but the pair had sped away.
Police claim the stolen car had been driven through a number of red lights at speed.
Eventually, the car was stopped by police deploying stringers, tyre deflating devices, on Alderley St near Hume St and the car eventually came to a stop in Mackenzie St where the pair was arrested.
The duo was not required to enter any pleas to their respective charges which include burglary, stealing, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
The 13-year-old did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to appear in the Children’s Court in Toowoomba on January 7 when he was due to appear on other unrelated matters.
The mothers of both boys were present during their respective court appearances.
The 14-year-old, who police claim was driving the allegedly stolen vehicle, applied for bail which was objected to by police.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Julia Wheatley told the court the 14-year-old was already on bail for serious offences including throwing a knife at another child left stabbed in the back who required surgery.
Magistrate Andy Cridland, appearing via video link from Ipswich Magistrates Court, refused bail and remanded the teenager in custody to appear back in the same court on January 14 when he was due to appear on other matters.
