HONESTY is surely the best policy but it has left a 20-year-old man on probation and out of pocket by $720.
Solicitor Joe Millican told Toowoomba Magistrates Court but for his client Lachlan Thomas Ryan’s honesty the police would have had difficulty in prosecuting him at all on some of the charges.
The court heard a police search of Ryan’s Kearneys Spring home on January 21 had found a water pipe and electric scales beside his bed, $720 cash suspected as proceeds of drug sales and a mobile phone.
Ryan had volunteered his PIN, when not required to, and police found a number of drug-related text messages pointing to the sale of cannabis, police prosecutor Senior Constable Chris Willson told the court.
The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to four counts of supplying a dangerous drug and other drug related offences.
Mr Millican said his client was a disability pensioner due to diagnosed mental health issues for which he was under the care of an agency.
Magistrate Howard Osborne convicted and placed Ryan on 12 months probation and ordered all items seized by police, including the $720 cash, be forfeited to the Crown.
