A 30-year-old Toowoomba man might have a future in horticulture after having a 100% success rate in growing cannabis plants from seed.

Zane Sydney Lundon told police who turned up at his Kearneys Spring home on January 21 that he had been gifted five cannabis seeds two months earlier and that he had planted them and they had grown.

When police arrived to conduct the search, those five seeds had grown to about 75cm each in pots in the back yard, police prosecutor Julia Wheaton told Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

The 30-year-old told officers he had sustained injuries in a motorcycle crash two years ago and he had been self-medicating with cannabis to help him sleep, Senior Constable Wheaton said.

Lundon pleaded guilty to producing and possessing cannabis and to possessing a water pipe and bowl containing less than 1g of green leafy material found during the search as well as to an unrelated drink-driving offence when he had blown a breath/alcohol reading of 0.08 about 5.30pm in Kearneys Spring on November 22.

His solicitor Joe McConnell, of MacDonald Law, told the court his client had broken seven bones in the motorcycle crash and had been given medication but a friend had suggested cannabis instead.

His client had no criminal history whatsoever and having to attend court had been an “eye-opener” for him, he said.

Mr McConnell said he had counselled his client into seeing a GP about his pain and sleep issues.

On the drugs offences, Magistrate Graham Lee fined Lundon $750 with no conviction recorded and on the drink-driving offence he was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for four months though a restricted (work) licence was granted.
