Wanted man’s ill-fated attempt to avoid arrest during Harristown standoff

Police swarmed on a Toowoomba suburb after a routine check located a man wanted on several arrest warrants who refused to surrender peacefully.

Police inquiring about an unrelated matter spooked a wanted car thief who was parked across the road leading to a tense standoff after he climbed onto a nearby roof.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were called to a disturbance at a Sheehan St home in South Toowoomba about 11.40am on Tuesday when they observed a stolen vehicle parked in the yard of a neighbouring property.

Two people were taken into custody at the Sheehan St address, including a 21-year-old man and 15-year-old girl, and a 23-year-old man was found nearby.

Another 23-year-old man however ran from the area and climbed onto the roof of a property on Dunkley St.

Police established a cordon and negotiated with the man, who was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital for assessment.

Police checks revealed the man was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

The four people are assisting police with their inquiries in relation to property crime incidents across Toowoomba in recent weeks.

Investigations are ongoing.
