Toowoomba Police have been carrying out a major roadside operation on a major arterial road, in response to the massive state road toll in 2021.
Sergeant Mick Loveday said police set up road stops on both sides of Bridge St in Torrington from 1pm until 5pm.
It comes after 83 people have already died on Queensland roads this year, a big spike from the same point in 2020.
Sergeant Loveday said officers would be focusing on motorcycle riders, after there were 25 deaths recorded this year.
“I’ve organised an operation out here in relation to the traffic situation throughout Queensland,” he said.
“Everyone would be aware that the current road toll is at 83, which is 25 above what it was this time last year.
“There are 25 motorbike riders who have been killed this year which is a massive increase, and as a result we’re performing a static RBT site on Bridge St, particularly focusing on motorbike riders.
“We want to get traffic to be aware and take care.”
The operation follows similar activity last weekend with a much smaller team.
Police will be at the site until later this afternoon.
