A Toowoomba man has been fined after he faced court for pushing two full trolleys of groceries into his pregnant partner after an argument while grocery shopping.

The man, 39, appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to contravention of a domestic violence order.

The court was told that on July 12 this year, the man and his partner were grocery shopping at Kearneys Spring when police were called by witnesses who reported a male assaulting a female in the carpark of a shopping centre.

Police prosecutor Rohan Brewster-Webb told the court witnesses had reported seeing a man push two full trolleys of groceries into the victim, and yell abuse at the woman as the pair packed the groceries into the car before they drove away.

Checks of the vehicle revealed it belonged to the man, and when police arrived at his address they found him in the same clothes that were captured on CCTV footage.

Mr Brewster-Webb said the man had told police he had left to go to the toilet while shopping, and when he returned he found the trolleys abandoned and was forced to pay for them himself.

The court was told the man had admitted he gave the victim a “tongue lashing” and said that he wished police knew what it was like living with her.

Police also spoke with the victim, who was two months pregnant, and said that while she was anxious and stressed, she had confirmed the incident took place.

The man’s solicitor, Matt Gemmell, told the court his client had been frustrated that the trolleys had been left in the store and pushed them towards the victim and struck her out of frustration.

Magistrate Graham Lee convicted the man for the offence and imposed a $1000 fine.
