Police are investigating a hit and run incident early Sunday morning that left a 13-year-old girl laying injured on a Toowoomba street.
The girl was taken by ambulance to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition and was yesterday resting at home suffering what was believed to be concussion.
The incident happened near the intersection of Ruthven and North Sts about 12.45am Sunday.
The girl’s mother, who is not named so as to protect the identity of her teenage daughter, told The Chronicle her daughter was “very lucky” and had not broken any bones but she would be monitoring her over the coming days.
“She was out with her brother and some friends and she said they were playing ‘tiggy’,” the girl’s mother said.
“She ran onto the road and didn’t see the car.
“She said she heard the car speed up and that was it.
“She was thrown over the bonnet and landed on the road.”
In a frank and honest interview, the woman conceded the girl came from a “troubled home” and had been in and out of foster homes for most of her life.
“She self placed with me about six months ago and I’ve been doing my best to watch out for her,” the mother said.
“But I can’t watch her 24 hours a day and she sometimes sneaks out at night with her friends.”
The girl told her mother she believed the car was black in colour.
None of the girl’s group got the car’s registration number.
The girl’s mother said another driver had pulled up to help after the incident and he had spoken to police at the scene.
She pleaded with the alleged hit and run driver to come forward.
“No-one should be run over and left on the road like an animal, especially a child,” she said.
“If anyone has any information about the driver I ask them to contact police who are investigating it.”
