Gold Coast Police have arrested and charged man and woman after they were pulled from the wreck of a Mazda CX-5 that was stolen from a Newtown home more than two weeks ago in a brazen daylight robbery.
Toowoomba Detective Senior Sergeant Paul McCusker said the vehicle was involved in a crash at Broadbeach early Monday morning.
The vehicle crashed into a power pole about 4.22am near the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and Rosewood Avenue.
A 25-year-old man with no fixed address was driving at the time. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital from treatment.
Police also arrested a 24-year-old Ipswich woman.
Both are now in police custody and are expected to be charged on Monday.
Sgt McCusker said neither people have any connection to Toowoomba or the armed robbery that led to its theft.
“It shows that a stolen car can go a long way,” he said.
The development brings the total number of arrested in relation to the robbery to four.
Police allege that about 1.45pm on August 3 a 25-year-old Goodna man confronted a 45-year-old woman at a Brigalow Street address.
The man is accused of then arming himself with a knife and demanding the keys to the woman’s vehicle, a blue Mazda CX-5.
After allegedly taking the keys and the vehicle, the 25-year-old then picked up a 28-year-old South Toowoomba man a short distance away.
The woman was not physically injured.
After extensive inquiries into the incident Toowoomba detectives raided a city home early in the morning of August 11.
Travis James Robertson Washington, 28, and Shaun Douglas Hall, 25, spent the night in custody before their matters were mentioned before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday.
Both men have been charged with one count each of entering premises, burglary, entering dwelling with intent, robbery while armed and in company and unlawful use of motor vehicle.
Washington was returned to prison on an outstanding warrant with the charges from his recent arrest adjourned to October 7.
Hall was remanded in custody until September 2.
Neither man has entered a plea.
